ICELAND  INTERACTIVE  GUIDE

10/2/2021

After many years of inactivity I'm here to share with you my guide for a great roadtrip in what became my favourite honeymoon, the amazing Iceland!
Imagen
First of all, this guide is different to my previous one, since it's going to be smaller in content and more like an aid to the interactive map (since it's there where I put all the info).
You can open the interactive map by clicking on the image or here

map  legend

As you can see, I created diferent categories in the map which are the following:
  • Nature (Green): Volcanoes, canyons, waterfalls, rivers, geothermal sulfur pits...
  • To do (Blue): Thing you can do, tours, thermal baths, hikes, monuments...
  • Shops/Restaurants (Yellow): Here are the two cheapest supermarkets on the island, places to buy alcohol in and unique restaurants as well
  • Navigation (Black): Advice to make your route easier or to save money in tolls
  • Other (Red): Advice on alerts and aurora activities.

You should note that the map is color coded in each category, with darker colour meaning the place is way better than the light one, useful if you don''t want to see absolutely everything and focus on the unique places. For example, Detifoss waterfall is way cooler than Rjúkandi.

why  is  it  useful?

So now you will say, why is this guide better than any of the millions of blogs about Iceland out there? It's because you can open the map on your phone and conveniently drive to the next destination without searching all info on the internet, it's all in the same place. I should tell you that every destination has an image, but it will only show on computer, not on the phone.
But as age has taught me, as always, there are limitations, while I don't try to sell to you that my map is the best, it's the product of tons of research hours, but it covers mainly the Ring Road, excluding the Westfjords and Highlands, if you plan to go there (more of that below), you should complement this map.
Let's have a look about what can you find here:

some  advice  for  your trip

Food is not that expensive: Make sure to buy in Kronan or Bonus since they are the cheapest supermarkets, I marked most of them in the map, you have a wide selection of easy to prepare food there as well as Skyr, 500gr yoghurt with less than 300Kcal mostly made of proteins which will complement any kind of meal you have.

EU roaming works in Iceland: Data connection is for free for Europeans, so that gives you access to GPS and my map everywhere.

Most attractions are free: I think we just paid a total of 15€ for the parkings, most nature sights and things to do (except the tours) cost nothing.

Do you really want to do the full Ring Road? That´s the goal I had, but honestly, from Myvatn lake to Reyjavik (most of the west) landscape is pretty dull comparing to the east, if you don't have enough days, focus on the South-East with a day or two for the north.

Go to the Highlands instead: If you have an offroad vehicle and the season is good, save the western part of the island and cut from north to the Golden Ring through the wild Highlands, for a better route!

Stay alert for Auroras! You can check on this website as well as in the map the official forecast of activity and sky clearness, an activity higher than 2 will grant you great shots.

Get a good car insurance: There are many gravel roads, so it's pretty likely to have a new dent in the windshield, believe me, you won't regret it. Also, most car companies don't require to wash the car, so feel free to return it covered in mud (as long as plate and the inside are clean).

Beer is not expensive... if you know where to buy: Alcoholic drinks with high ammount of alcohol cost way more than in Europe, but local beers have the same price, not in the bars but in Vínbúðin shops, which is run by the goverment. Those are the only places where you can buy alcohol apart from bars. A pretty good can of local craft beer cost 2,5-3€ which is not that bad. Also, alcohol in the airport is tax-free...
I hope you liked my post, after 4 years, I think, it was time to share a bit of my knowledge with all of you!
