5) What to see

The Old Town is the most beautiful part of the city, and has many things to see as well as most discos and bars, but you can find more information in the Cheap Guide or in the information office, since the Old Town is almost the same for a tourist than a local.

Instead of making a detailed walkthough, I will point out the spots you should not miss in this city:

  • The Presidential Palace: Is just a minute on foot from Obchodna, and it has dressed guards keeping it safe
  • The Blue Church: Although in practice is a normal church, the fact that is almost entirely painted in blue makes it a little bit fantastic, like from a Disney movie. You need to visit after 18 pm or during masses.
  • Man at work: The most iconic Bratislava statue, which smiles from the ground (it's said because he can see ladies underwear from there). It's inside the Old Town and features its own traffic sign.
  • Central church painted roof: Like the Vienna cathedral, the one in Bratislava also has a nice painted roof that you can see from the square where the tourist information office is, just behind the tower with the astronomical clock.
  • Napoleon's Bench: In the main square you can see a statue of Napoleon in front of the French embassy, he is resting over the bench staring at the city because it is said that he never conquered it and just laid siege around it until his rule ended.
  • Most SNP: Many people call it the UFO, and the restaurant in the top has the same name, but if you have imagination you will see that the bridge is a metaphor of a chariot, with the UFO beign the driver of it which is holding the horses (the bridge) with the strings.
  • The inverted piramid: The Slovak Radio building has a very original architecture, is located very close to the train station and 5 minutes from Obchodna.
  • The Bishop Palace: You will recognice it because of the black circle around its top, representing the old bishop residence. Going in is quite cheap and is one of the most beautiful buildings in the city, and features very valuable collection of tapestries (said to be worth much more than the building itself).
  • The Stefanikova street: Some buildings are still under repair, but if you are headed towards the train station, take this street and see some remaining Austro-Hungarian big buildings.
  • Slavin Monument: The monument itself is not much, is another typical soviet post-war memorial, but the scenery from the hill is the best of the city.
  • The Ghost Street of the Old Town: Inside the Old Town and close to the city walls exist Kapitulska street, which it seems almost nobody wants to go by, since I have always walked here alone, it is quite nice and specially very quiet, even if is just a few metres from the busy main turistical streets.
  • Eurovea riverside: In front of the modern Eurovea shopping centre is the best part of the riverside promenade, with a lot of lounge bars full of young people and some of the newest buildings of the city.
